Obstetricians specialise in medical care during pregnancy and childbirth. You may wish to consult with a private obstetrician throughout your pregnancy. If you plan to give birth in a public hospital or birth centre, you may need to see an obstetrician only if there is a medical need or complication. An obstetrician is a doctor who specialises in childbirth and in providing medical care to women during pregnancy (antenatal care) and after birth (postnatal care). Obstetricians are trained to manage complex or high-risk pregnancies and births, as well as to perform interventions and caesarean sections. Many have also received training in women's reproductive health (gynaecology). If you choose to give birth in a public hospital or birth centre as a public patient and require an obstetrician, you usually do not have the option of selecting your own obstetrician. There may not be a local obstetrician in some rural or remote areas. If there are no complications, some general practitioners (GPs) with additional obstetrics training can deliver babies. If complications arise, you may be transferred to a hospital with an obstetrician.
