A painless normal delivery or labor analgesia (Epidural) is a technique that uses a very specific concentration of drugs. Although the drug alleviates pain, it does not impair your ability to push your baby out through the birth canal. This technique employs a needle and a very thin plastic tube (epidural catheter). An infusion pump continuously administers the pain-relieving medication through this tube. The primary goal of the epidural is to reduce contraction pain to an acceptable level. Epidural analgesia usually eliminates all pain when your baby is delivered. It allows the mother to concentrate on the delivery by relieving pain. It is a relaxation aid that can prevent the exhaustion and irritation that most women experience during childbirth, lowering the risk of developing postpartum complications. By relaxing the pelvic and vaginal muscles, epidural analgesia aids the baby's descent. It also aids in lowering the mother's blood pressure, which can otherwise rise to dangerous levels during labor. Mothers who have a history of cardiac complications or who are experiencing heart problems may experience severe pain. In such cases, a painless delivery will be advantageous.
